How Useful is a Dream Dictionary Really?

At the start of your dream journey, one of the most frustrating things is to figure out what the symbolism in your dreams means! Most often people start their dream conversation with me by saying: "I had this weird dream ?" What makes it "weird" is the strange collection of people, objects, places and events that take place in the dream.

How do you make sense of it? I guess you'd be thinking that a dream dictionary is a good place to start.

The biggest "complaint" I hear is: "I looked up "such-and-such" in a dream dictionary and it makes absolutely no sense to me!" Well, I'm not surprised.

Watch out for Dream Dictionary Bloopers!

Some dream dictionaries contain some real whoppers. Here's a selection from some dubious sources I saw recently [don't laugh ? these are real examples!]:

Burglar - If you catch a burglar in your dream you're about to inherit some money.

Funeral - signifies news of an engagement or wedding.

Marshmallow - means you will meet a new friend of the opposite sex. Razor - is a warning to control your temper.

Well, you get the "picture"! These "interpretations" are obviously just ridiculous. And you can easily see that for yourself ? intuitively you know that these meanings should not be taken seriously.

So do you even need a dream dictionary?

Well the answer is "yes" and "no" and "depends".

"Yes" ? use a dream dictionary when you're really stuck with a symbol and you need some inspiration to find the right meaning. Just make sure you're using a reputable resource and use your "BS" detector!

"No" ? avoid using one when you can immediately relate the symbol in your dream to something in your waking life and your "gut" is giving you a positive reaction to the interpretation you've intuited.

"Depends" on the reliability of the source of the information. Don't take any meaning at face value. Test them out first. You will be able to validate your dream messages in your life. You'll also automatically collect your own personal dream symbol dictionary if you're actively journaling and interpreting your dreams. You'll be able to tell when certain symbols are valid for you or not.

How to use Dream Symbols

I've collected over 1000 dream symbols in my 10-year dream quest and have validated them all for myself. Most of them are universal in nature and I've noticed time and again how the same meanings appear for the same symbols in reputable research works ? from dream therapists to psycho analysts, psychics, mystics, shamans and other metaphysicians.

For example:

Water - signifies your emotional self, your intuition and sub-conscious

Fire - signifies spiritual and psychic energy; purification; passion and creativity

Earth - signifies your physical self; reality and practicality; groundedness

Air - signifies your intellectual self; your thoughts and plans

Taking this a step further, certain "transport vehicles" relating to Water [emotion], Earth [physical] and Air [thought] signify how you are coping with these aspects in your life.

For example, if you're in a boat in your dream this represents how you're coping emotionally: are you gliding smoothly through the water indicating that your emotions are smooth and calm or are you being tossed on the waves of a stormy sea indicating abnormal emotional turmoil that is negatively affecting your life? You see what I mean?

Your dreams aren't trying to trick you! All you have to do is learn to understand the language of your dreams and to translate the imagery you see with your "dream eyes" into useful information you can use in your waking life.

Youve Got a Great Business, but Nobody Cares!

I would like to share a disturbing little secret with you. Almost 70% of the people you do face-to-face business, with will never speak to you again!

It's not that they didn't like you or get value from your services, but they just don't care. They have other things on their minds. The kids need new clothes, the furnace needs repairing, and the car is making that strange knocking sound again, and, of course, there is a big report due tomorrow. These are the things that take up your customer's bandwidth. They haven't thought about you since you last spoke to them weeks ago.

So, why wouldn't they think about you? Didn't that last marketing campaign garner great results? As the available research suggests, it's not that they don't like you, but rather, they simply forgot about you. They have other things on their minds and there wasn't any good reason to think about you. By the way, popular research suggests that, in general, only about 8% of customers are dissatisfied with the product or service they received. To illustrate this, I recently worked with a company that has served over 3,000 clients in the past 3 years. In this same period, they have never sent out a 'thank you' card, email or direct mail piece to these former clients. What's more surprising, is that they were still getting a third of their new business from referrals. So, why are they not reminding happy, satisfied customers that they are still around and looking to make even more happier, satisfied customers? The answer is simple: they are just too busy with managing the day-to-day business, to create marketing pieces to reach out to the customers.

Instead, they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on expensive shotgun-style advertising to get the attention of potential customers. It's much easier to call up the Yellow Pages and place a year's worth of ads, than it is to create a meaningful relationship-based campaign. Relationship-building campaigns take time and energy; something we don't often have much of once the daily workload is taken care of.

To change this, a campaign was conceived which would thank the 3,000 past customers for their business and remind them that referrals had been the key to the company's success. The campaign also provided each past customer with both online and offline tools to pass on consistent referrals. At the same time, the company reduced its print ad placements to ensure results were not overshadowed by alternate forms of lead generators. The result: this company was able to triple revenues in just 12 months, almost solely attributable to referrals.

In business, there is no better way to grow than through referrals, which are the most effective form of marketing/advertising for many reasons. Firstly, they are the most cost-effective way of generating business and revenues. Referrals generally make decisions more quickly and are likely to purchase more often. The best part is that less negotiation and convincing is required to enroll them, because they already trust you and have seen your results, first-hand.

But referrals don't happen by accident. They are the product of a great customer experience, including sales, marketing and customer support efforts. What we sometimes forget, though, is that we have to remind customers how great their experience was, so that they will be more willing to make further referrals. 'Out of sight' is definitely 'out of mind', in this case.

So, how do you remind your past clients of their experience with you, without becoming just another telemarketer? This is best done in a four-step plan:

1. Identify the ideal referral candidates.
2. Articulate the company USP and how it relates to their network.
3. Create the ideal environment for referrals.
4. Thank the referrers.

If you have a small business or practice and can afford to meet with your entire network in person, then one-on-one meetings are the best approach. By creating appointments to meet and educate others in your network, you can develop numerous 'pots on the stove'. Each educated referrer then becomes an evangelist for your services. It is also important to realize that it is not the referrer that offers the opportunity, but rather their network of potential clients. You can expect to see the number of referrals increase with the number of referrers you have 'activated' in your network, and that number will grow exponentially as you 'activate' more and more people.

Recently, I observed how when two people sat down and systematically went through their rolodexes, they were able to generate over 50 potential referrals for one another. This one-on-one meeting was the result of a past meeting where the two people were introduced. Finding that they could not work directly with one another, they decided to try linking their networks together to create further opportunities.

Another excellent example of networking, was when one of my former clients hosted a cocktail party to 'enlighten' a group of carefully selected, well-connected individuals in their business network. The cocktail party aimed to educate these people, so that they would be better informed about the host's professional services, and, therefore, more likely to see potential referral opportunities. A short presentation that clearly articulated their USP gave the audience improved insight into a complex service offering, resulting in the host's desired outcome; more referrals.

Further creative ideas for active referrals come to mind: seminars, educational workshops, letters of introduction, brain trust meetings, developing an advisory board of well-connected people, sporting events and partnerships, to name a few.

In summation, I believe that referrals are the most efficient form of marketing/ advertising available, and the best way to make referrals work for you, is to stay in contact with your network constantly.

Here is a list of elements for a successful referral marketing campaign:

**Referrals are not based on a transaction, but rather on an ongoing relationship.

**We should connect people with no thought of what we may get in return.

**Figure out how to overcome the resistance of asking for the referral.

**Educate your network about what you do.

**Ask for appropriate referrals.

**Assist referrers in doing their work by passing on cards and materials.

All Youve Got To Lose Is Everything

Everything, that is, if you ignore those folks whose behaviors have the greatest effect on your business.

What those people see and believe about your enterprise, pretty well determines what their follow-on behaviors will be - for example, do business with you, or move on to someone else.

Is that what you want? Of course not. So let's do something about it.

While I recognize that there are other factors bearing on the success of your business, this one is simply too important, and its impact too severe and too immediate, to ignore.

You get this airplane off the ground by listing your top outside audiences who, when they like you OR ignore you, you feel it.

In other words, they are groups of people important to you whom we refer to as target audiences or target publics. The one MOST important to you, we call your key target audience. And that's why you must list them in priority order so you know where you really need to direct your resources.

How do you determine who thinks what about you? Sounds like work, but you must continually monitor that key target audience (and probably others). Are you bothered by what they tell you? Is there a perception problem? If there is, we know it usually turns into a behavior problem, so something must be done about it now, at the perception stage.

What you've just done is establish your public relations goal - a specific behavior flowing from an equally specific perception, which we'll work on creating starting right now.

Now that you've got a public relations goal, you need a public relations strategy. Lucky for you (and for all of us), there are only three possible strategies. Create opinion among that target audience where there may be none, change existing opinion, or reinforce it. We've picked "create" so let's proceed.

With your goal and strategy in hand, you begin thinking "messages." And I mean persuasive messages carefully designed to deal with that perception problem you discovered when you interacted with your key target audience. Keep your message focused on correcting that perception problem, and keep it believable and credible. Try it out on a few colleagues to see it if really is persuasive.

Now you need a few "beasts of burden," communications tactics whose job it is to carry those persuasive messages directly to the attention of the folks who make up that key target audience of yours.

And there are tons of them from trade show appearances, awards programs and news releases to speeches, brochures, radio interviews and face-to-face meetings.

Well, here we are again at the monitoring stage. At the start of the program, you monitored the feelings and perceptions of your key target audience so that you could identify the problem and set your public relations goal and strategy.

Now, you monitor all over again to see what kind of progress you made. Specifically, you want to know how many individuals received the message, through what tactics, and how many are aware of your messages' actual content. Also gives you a chance to make mid-course corrections by adjusting both message content and your mix of communications tactics.

Keep the faith! As time goes by, you'll begin noticing signs of awareness of your business, and a growing receptiveness to what you have to say. The bottom line, of course, will be welcome indications that the behaviors you have sought to modify in your direction are, in fact, doing just that.

In public relations, that spells success!

A Minute Can Turn into Hours for the Child of a Work-at-Home Mom

In theory, working at home is an ideal situation. But in reality, it's difficult to balance the needs of your family with the needs of your clients.

Phones, fax machines and e-mails have no common courtesy, nor does your client really care about your personal situation. You are simply a means to an end consisting of a telephone number, an e-mail address and a 1099 at the end of the year. For the most part, you are not afforded special considerations and must respond to their needs or your business will suffer.

Long before I began my career as a writer, I was already a work-at-home mom. I provided outsourcing solution to a variety of clients, which included bookkeeping, personnel records, reports and creating employee handbooks and mission statements. Initially my clients were leery; it was a time when home businesses were just emerging. I went to great lengths to establish and maintain my associations. Part of my success was the perceived illusion was that I was available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Continuously, I had to prove my home life did not interfere with their business needs or deadlines.

One day, as I absentmindedly brushed my son off and repeated the phrase, "just a minute" for the fifth time, I suddenly realized why he had no concept of time. That "minute" I was speaking of was hours away, at best. The business I built so that I could be at home with him was also the business that was taking me away from him. I turned back to my computer to complete the report I was working on and my son returned to his video game in frustration. It was then I realized my solution was only a paragraph away.

I was experienced in writing mission statements for my clients. These leadership tools are used in the corporate world to define goals, values and purpose. A successful business takes commitment, resources, responsibility, problem solving, honesty and hard work. Doesn't that also define raising a child? Parenting consists of all those factors and so much more.

As in any business, the business of raising a child will bring accomplishments, successes and rewards, but it will also have it's share of conflicts, disappointments and setbacks. However, when it comes to the business of family the stakes are much greater than a new client, a contract, a promotion or a raise; they involve the wellbeing of your child.

The emotional difficulties of childhood serve to build strength, courage and character. But to a child, these conflicts may feel catastrophic if they have no one to turn to. You can help prepare your child to cope if you take time out each day to remind him how much you love him, express your commitment to his wellbeing and provide positive affirmations that help foster confidence.

Just as you keep focus on your business goals and rise to meet your company's mission statement, keep focus on your personal goals as a parent. Run your family business with the integrity and respect of a healthy, thriving corporation. Define your ideals, set plans to action, keep communications open and reward success. Encourage individuality, praise creativity and share the wealth. Be positive and proactive. The business of family is one to be celebrated and cherished. It may not be listed as a FORTURNE 500, but it is the most important business of all.

TIPS FOR WORKING AT HOME

The luxuries you dreamed of as a work-at-home mom can quickly lead to burdens unless you are organized and scheduled. This schedule consists of a balance between business and family and activities should work in harmony with your child's needs, not against them.

Define your work area and organize it so valuable time can be spent on the task at hand.

Determine quiet times, such as early morning or after your child goes to bed. Use this period to complete tasks that need the most concentration.

Set a start and finish time for your workday.

Allow a full day off from work each week and stick to this schedule as much as possible.

Start each morning by talking with your child about the day's events. Include your child in these plans. By informing him of your activities, he will be comforted in the knowledge that there will be time for him.

Remember that you are entitled to breaks, lunch, vacation time and even sick time. You are the boss.

When it comes time for your break, stop working, compliment your child for his cooperation, and spend the next block of time enjoying the moment.

Record an "out to lunch" message and set your phones daily. Even if you are sitting at your desk, do not answer the phones. Your clients will become accustom to your schedule.

If you need to run an errand, but are concerned about missing an important call, don't wait around stressing, forward calls to your cell phone.

Consider hiring a babysitter a few hours per week to read or play with your child or do a special craft.

Most of all, remember your priorities as a parent and your commitment to your personal mission statement. When your child needs to talk, be grateful he or she is turning to you. Keep the lines of communication open, there will come a time when they need you for more than a glass of milk and a snack. And when that time comes, they might not be able to wait, "just a minute".

Location Sensitivity - Cell Phone GPS

This is basically a system to locate the handheld when making a call to 911. In the mid to late 1990's, many people got cell phones just for the emergency use of being able to call for help almost anywhere. The problem came up when statistics showed that almost 92% of all serious 911 calls, (where the person was just barely able to make the call), they either didn't know where they were or was unable to tell the 911 operator where they were, or they might not have been able to talk at all. This caused a big concern, 911 operators couldn't do anything but listen to the person on their cell phone as they pass away. The Location Sensitivity system still doesn't work if you are in an area that only has an analog signal. (Which is the older cellular system of the mid 1990's and earlier). Most metropolitan areas and all interstate freeways are covered by the newer digital service. It's just when you get out in the middle of no-where, you might end up with an analog signal. Most phones will display the letter "A" in the top right or left corner when using this system. Check your phone documentation, some phones don't even have this capability. Which means if you get into one of these areas, you can't make any type of call what-so-ever.

Soon, the Location Sensitivity feature will probably be offered by the cellular companies as part of their pricing plan. Some carriers like Nextel are already taking advantage of this new technology by giving customers a GPS location service along with their calling plan. If you don't have this option with your carrier, and you have a Smartphone you can always purchase one of the SD slot GPS units that works with mapping software. The program I've really enjoyed is Mapopolis, which works great with most of the popular GPS hardware available. And most even have a voice activation that will tell you where to turn, which is directed through the speaker phone portion of the Smartphones. The ability to have GPS information and mapping on your handheld will be a great plus while traveling.

Back to the Location Sensitivity. I'm just wondering how much the cellular companies are going to charge for such a GPS type service!? I'm sure they're all working hard right now on the new pricing plans that we'll have to pay if you don't have the GPS hardware to install on your Smartphone.

When these services become available, they will only be location based. Another words, most GPS's these days will actually give you your current altitude and most have a pretty fast refresh rate. The refresh rate is the time between position updates. An example; If you have a GPS in your hand that refreshed three times per second, this would be a very acturate reading. Even if you are driving at 70 miles per hour, the moving map on the GPS will be able to keep up with your actual location. That's an issue the engineers are dealing with on the Location Sensitivity system. It wasn't designed to have any type of refresh rate at all. Once a position has been found, it never was designed to refresh that position. (I guess if you are hurt, and you called 911, you aren't supposed to be moving. Hmmm, So if you fell off a bridge, and landed in the back of a truck driving down the interestate, I'm not sure if they would be able to locate you. They would know where you were when you first dialed 911, but as your location changes, they might not be able to find you). Supposedly, the 911 operator can pull a refresh, this would at least tell them the direction the vehicle is moving. But to locate you while you're moving, might be more difficult than anyone had expected.

Another problem with many of the handheld units, the actual speed of the processors within them. Most cell phones operate on around 1 to 2 MHz processor speed. Most Smartphones operate anywhere between 30 to 500 MHz. (Most new home computers are operating between 2 to 4 GHz processor speed, just to give you an idea). This is where the engineers are running into the biggest problem with creating a GPS refresh rate. The processors in all handhelds will just have to be faster than they are today. And like all of our other technolgies, I'm sure this won't be a problem very much longer for the designers.

Hmmm, soon we'll have Pentium 9 cellular and Smartphones running at 8 GHz processor speed! You know it's going to come to this, and it's not that far away.

Small Business Loans Can Help You Write Your Success Story

Scene one: you are sitting on your office desk surrounded with files and work overload, you are thoroughly frustrated. You work hard and get paid. But somewhere something is lacking.

Scene two: you work for yourself; you do what you want to do. You work hard and you are satisfied. You go home a better person each day cause you work for yourself. And you definitely earn more.

You don't even have to look at the results; votes for Scene two are definitely more. You want a life like that. But every business entails capital. Small business loans can accrue the capital you need to start a small business. With so many online sources for small business loans, you don't need to rely on family or relatives for capital.

Homework! Yes, it is not meant for school kids only. You too have to do it, to find the right resource of your small business loans. There are a few points, the loans lender will be looking at, when he is contemplating providing you small business loans. A lender will be paying attention on your education, experience, business plan and its feasibility. Other things that are crucial are repaying ability, credit history, equity, presence of collateral.

The first things will be your ability to repay. Every loan is meant to be repaid. Loan lender wants his money back. They will look for a business that has existed for some years now. If you are starting a new business, prepare an application that will prove to them that you will repay the loan. If your business is low risk proposal, you are getting a small business loans.

Presence of collateral would provide a positive boost to your small business loan application. The financial institution would be looking for an alternative source to payback the loan. Without collateral, you would need a cosigner who can pledge collateral. Collateral can be any business or personal assets that can be sold to pay for the small business loan. The market value of collateral is not taken into account but the value which results after negating the valued lost when the collateral is liquidated.

Equity is also significant. The equity will be in the form of money you invest in your business. The loan lender will be very pleased to know, if you have invested your money in the business. If there is enough equity in your business to payback the loan, the small business loan will be yours.

The next crucial thing will be called a credit report. If your credit report is good, your small business loan application will be reaching the top of the application pile. If you have no idea what your history reveal for you ? get a copy of credit report. Make sure the details given there are correct. In case there is an error, get it corrected before you apply for small business loans. Pay all the pending debts and get going.

The question that you will be facing with small business loans is what you are going to do with the money. Give concrete answers. Convince the lender that you will repay the small business loan with long term profitability that your plan ensures. Your confidence will be a key to unlocking small business loans.

Small business loans are available in three forms -

Short term loans will solve funds problem for immediate business starting. Their term is usually one year or less.
